Substance abuse is a pandemic in the United States. From the abuse of seemingly innocent substances such as marijuana and alcohol to the abuse of street drugs like meth amphetamine and heroin; Substance abuse costs individuals substantially, and it costs the community as a whole.
According to the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services:
- Illicit drug use costs the U.S.A. approximately $181 billion / year
- Excessive alcohol use costs the U.S.A. approximately $235 billion / year
It’s not surprising that substance abuse comes with such a high price tag when you consider all the health, legal, criminal, and personal issues that often come in its wake. These costs are incurred upon the family and upon the government (which occurs by taxation to cover the costs. In 2015, nearly 24 million Americans, age 12 and older, had abused an illicit drug. Marijuana is still the most frequently abused drug, with more than 20 million Americans citing use of marijuana within the prior 30 days, and more than 10 million people admitting to using marijuana on a near daily basis. These statistics are rising due to the legalization of marijuana. Well, so are the medical costs. Drug use is escalating! Substance abuse is not the way to live a well-adjusted life. Substance abuse is the cause of many horrific issues within the household and can destroy a family. Do NOT let substance abuse destroy your life and those that love you. We, at Door of Hope want to help you conquer substance abuse and help point you in the right direction!
